Hello to all our Weven babes, we're so happy you joined us. Welcome to our second blog post!
Today we wanted to talk about pricing and transparency when it comes to our products. We try to be as transparent as possible with Weven so we made a little guide for you about how our products are priced!
To us, sustainability goes hand in hand with transparency.
In this post you can see exactly what you’re paying for, what goes into producing our girls and how we come to a fair pricing structure for all involved.
Thank you for taking the time to read! 💚💜🧡
A common question people ask when it comes to #SustainableFashion is: "if fair brands have a lower mark up then why are they often more expensive?". The answer to this is most often, someone along the chain is not being paid fairly, and that is usually the artisan or garment workers. If you take into consideration that most often these items are #handmade and take time to make, the price of labour that a lot of Fashion brands pay can be appallingly low.
Most of the time, when brands are not transparent about their pricing, the consumer will never actually know how much money actually goes to those producing the items. That’s why it’s so important that improvements can be made in the Fashion industry and that those most vulnerable are treated better. And this was one of the most important issues to us when we created Weven.
Another thing to consider is the truth behind mark ups. Traditionally brands have a high mark-up, often at least 2x the true cost of the item - luxury brands actually have even higher mark-ups! However, #SmallBrands like us who can sell direct to consumers can afford to keep prices lower. We sell our bags on other platforms but we do not mark up the price on those platforms! We actually cover that cost ourselves. Our profit margin on every product produced in Holland is only between 20%.
So, what’s the true price of our bags?
Approximately 48% of the price of our girls comes from production: labour, pattern making, designs, materials and fabrics. The production of our first two collections was done in collaboration with Makers Unite in their beautiful Amsterdam atelier, and the fabrics used were locally sourced in Europe from companies holding deadstock, recycled and vegan fabrics. Our vegan silk and recycled wool are certified. Additional materials like magnets or fusing were purchased from small local businesses.💜
Our production is now based in Brazil! We always wanted to work with small communities around the globe and support their local artisans, so we’re so excited for this to become a reality! ✨
As a small brand, you have to keep adapting and evolving. We pledge to always be transparent with our customers and is always with you babes in mind that we keep moving forward. If in the future any changes are made within our business, we'll make sure to keep this page updated for you. 💚
Around 10% is used for marketing, social media and promotion. Unfortunately these things are not free and time and expense must be invested to get a small brand out there! Shopping small, sustainable and local is more important than ever. We believe that word of mouth is a strong marketing tool so if you love us and other small brands, don’t be afraid to share with friends! 🧡
Approximately 5% is spent on packaging materials. It’s so important to us that our packaging is sustainable! That can be a little more expensive but when it’s better for the planet we can’t argue with that! Our mailers are compostable, our boxes are recycled, our tissue paper is FSC certified and printed with soy ink and all of our other paper products are made from PaperWise paper which is made from agricultural waste with 100% green energy. 💚
Around 2% of our costs go towards maintaining our website and general BTS.
And the rest?
After taxes, at the moment, the rest goes straight back into our business! We want to make a change in the fashion industry and advocate for the advantages of buying sustainably and we can’t do that without reinvesting back into our business and of course creating beautiful new products!
If in the future any of these elements change we will always keep you informed on our socials and on our website. We love to hear your thoughts and questions! So please don’t hesitate to contact us or comment below 💘
